‘Sorry about the damsel in distress thing,’ Harry said. ‘Twice in one week, too.’

She looked across at Dillon and tried to gauge his reaction, but his face was hard to read. He fired up the engine and wrenched the Lexus into a tight U-turn, his eyes fixed straight ahead. He’d hardly said a word since he’d found her in the valley.

Somehow she had managed to stumble back to her car and retrieve her bag from under the seat. She’d sunk down on to the ground, huddled against the Mini, and phoned him with trembling hands. By the time he’d found her, she’d grown cold and rigid.

She flicked another glance at him. His mouth had a zippered-up look, and his fingers were clenched on the steering wheel. Every now and then, he’d flex them open and closed, as if he was trying to make his mind up about something.

He shot her a look. ‘Those cuts on your hands look nasty. So does the one over your eye. I’m taking you to A&E, you could need stitches.’

‘No, I told you, I’m fine.’ She made herself smile. ‘Really, I am.’

‘If you ask me, you look concussed.’

She shook her head, and then wished she hadn’t. A sharp pain drilled through her forehead. Maybe he was right about the concussion.

‘I’ll be okay.’ She massaged the stiffness developing at the base of her neck. ‘I just need to rest.’

He frowned and turned his attention back to the road. He was dressed in jeans and an expensive leather jacket that fell loosely around his frame. The black leather looked as soft as butter, and Harry wondered what would happen if she reached out and touched it.

She cleared her throat. ‘Where are we going?’

‘Where would you like to go?’

Harry peered out at the black fields and hedges, and decided she’d had enough of the countryside for the time being. ‘Would you mind if we went back to the city? We could go to my place, get a takeaway … if you like?’

Dillon met her eyes, his gaze full of questions, but he just shrugged and turned away. ‘Fine.’

Harry leaned back against the headrest and closed her eyes, trying to blank him out. Right now, she could only deal with the primitive essentials, such as shelter, sleep and food. Anything more complicated than that would have to wait. Her body felt slow and sleepy as it coped with the post-adrenaline crash.

Maybe she should have prepared him better for the horrific state of her car. All she’d told him over the phone was that she’d had an accident and had gone off the road. At the time, it had seemed expedient. Anything more involved, and the wobble in her voice would have gotten the better of her.

But he’d grown silent as he’d swept his torchlight over the car, flicking back the beam in a sharp double-take as he comprehended the extent of the damage. The windscreen had shattered into a frosted web, and the other windows looked like they’d been punched out by an invisible fist.
